Why jet-washing roofs can cost you ££££!Recently we have been asked to again repair roofs in the Tilehurst area, after they have been jet washed to remove moss.We found gutterings and down-pipes completely full of tile debris and moss, which have subsequently overflowed. This caused water to run down walls and could mean potential damp problems long term. The last roof we were called to needed 15 tiles to be replaced - simply because it was cleaned using a jet-washer. With our experience and knowledge of available replacement products, we try hard but new tiles will generally not match any jet washed roof tiles, as all the coloured fleck will have been blown off.Smart roof repairsTo counter this, and to make the house still look good from the street, we swapped some rear roof tiles to the front, so the repairs were not so obvious.Unbelievably the jet washer had also blown a hole straight through the G.R.P valley troughs. So please be aware of the dangers of jet-washing; they are great for all sorts of applications, but only clean roof tiles using hand tools to prevent unnecessary aggravation and cost!More about cleaning moss off roofs in our blog here
With the leaves falling faster than the temperature, it’s now time to clean out your guttering and gullies.Blocked outlets cause rainwater to overflow the guttering and run down the walls. This rainwater, constantly running down an exterior wall can penetrate the brickwork and mortar damaging it especially if rain cycles with repeated frosts and thaws. Knock on Effects of Poor Gutter MaintenanceDampness to the interior walls can be the outcome, especially the older solid wall buildings. And once an interior plastered wall becomes damp, it will eventually loose the ability to dry out and will remain damp. Only costly re-plastering will fix this. It’s usually a quick and easy job to clean out debris, and at the same time an inspection can be made of the guttering’s condition and identify potential problems before they become a serious issue that could pose threat to your properties structure, with major cost implications.Prevention is bestWe offer a ‘Hedgehog Gutter Brush’ system to help prevent the build up of debris in the guttering itself and outlet protection can be provided to avoid the soakaways becoming blocked. For free advice about Winter Roof Maintenance and estimates please contact us.

There are obvious problems with working on this during term time, so we are limited to a short window when all the kids are off. Urgent Re-Roofing JobJust to add more pressure on us, a large re-roof was thrown into the pot.The Peppard War Memorial Hall is being closed down for a month for various major works, including a complete new roof. The roofing contractor who was originally assigned the re-roofing works, pulled out at the last minute, putting the owners under real pressure. The committee then asked if we could ‘Fit it in’ during the summer. So the Tilehurst Roofing team have helped out and we are now well underway with another large contract.Just hope we have dry weather…………………
Roofing Problems with Moss Build-upOver the last couple of years we have been asked to remove moss from roof areas, both flat & pitched.A build up of moss on a shallow pitched roof, can in advanced conditions, cause water to penetrate the roof coverings.Moss also blocks soakaways and guttering, causing rainwater to run down the walls and causing dampness and staining.Jet washing of roofs is not only dangerous if no scaffolding is present, but harmful to the slate or tile covering. Soakaways also suffer with overload of water and a consequent build up of debris. This just moves a simple roofing problem elsewhere!Long term Moss, Algae and Lichen RemovalWe have found the answer to long term moss removal. Its a spray-on treatment that slowly and effectively kills Lichen and algae to leave a moss free roof.Once treated, the surface requires no waterblasting, scrubbing or rinsing. The surfactants work on contamination in conjunction with the elements (wind and rain) to slowly but gently wash the contamination away from the treated surface. In the very worst case scenario, it can take 6-12 months for stubborn contaminations to come clean. This is because the product can still be working (or cleaning) for up to 12 months. If the surface to be cleaned is not fully exposed to rainfall or is vertical, some assistance may be required to remove contamination, just thoroughly wet the dry surface with the product then forget about it.Remember: Be patient! Good things take time!
