Ensuring a Solid Foundation Base for Fitting Recently Tilehurst Roofing Contractors were called to attend a property in Tilehurst which had lost its fascia and barge boards in recent high winds. On attending the site, we spotted that a new u.p.v.c Cappit system had been pinned onto rotten timber fascia. The gutter was screwed into the Cappit system. Just the slight wind had lifted the fascia and guttering causing it to fall.
I was really concerned when I recently received a call from an old friend, who explained to me that his elderly father had just informed him that he was having roofing works that comprised a simple roofline replacement being carried out. This had come as a shock as he and his brothers were not informed about these proposed works. Overcharged for a Standard Roofline Replacement A £2000.00 deposit had been handed over to the "rogue roofers" as a down-payment on a £6000.00 estimate for roofing repairs. I asked what the works entailed and was told soffits and fascias. The property was a 3 bed semi so we knew that the cost was 3 times higher than it should have been because we have carried out many roofline replacements on the same estate recently.
With the leaves falling faster than the temperature, it’s now time to clean out your guttering and gullies.Blocked outlets cause rainwater to overflow the guttering and run down the walls. This rainwater, constantly running down an exterior wall can penetrate the brickwork and mortar damaging it especially if rain cycles with repeated frosts and thaws. Knock on Effects of Poor Gutter MaintenanceDampness to the interior walls can be the outcome, especially the older solid wall buildings. And once an interior plastered wall becomes damp, it will eventually loose the ability to dry out and will remain damp. Only costly re-plastering will fix this. It’s usually a quick and easy job to clean out debris, and at the same time an inspection can be made of the guttering’s condition and identify potential problems before they become a serious issue that could pose threat to your properties structure, with major cost implications.Prevention is bestWe offer a ‘Hedgehog Gutter Brush’ system to help prevent the build up of debris in the guttering itself and outlet protection can be provided to avoid the soakaways becoming blocked. For free advice about Winter Roof Maintenance and estimates please contact us.

Summer is now gone, and we are now looking forward to Christmas, knowing we actually had a good summer for once. With the inevitable heavy rain and winds forecast, its time to inspect and clean out your outlets and guttering systems. With a month's worth of rain in one day earlier this month, it is essential that your guttering's are cleared and maintained.Deepflow Guttering SystemsAs I have suggested many times last year, replacing the original guttering with a new larger capacity deepflow system is a good move. Deepflow systems are new are typically a deep semi-elliptical gutter and are ideal for large roofs and heavy rainfall. The winters are getting wetter with progressively heavy driving rain and these deepflow guttering systems can take the deluge of rainwater more easily than more traditional smaller gauge guttering systems. Please contact us for a free inspection and report on your guttering maintenance before the rains arrive in earnest!Caroline Scheel
Just one of the schools we are working on over the Easter break is the Reading School. Reading School is a very large imposing school with a lot of history and beautiful buildings. The guttering to the school has to be kept clear of debris, and that job and general roof maintenance falls to us.Using 2 No large cherry pickers, a mobile access system we undertook the works. Repairs were made and reports written up.Most of the guttering was over 60 feet in height so the work is not for the faint-hearted. We actually removed a pick up full of debris in just one week.Back down to earth we are also installing new underground drainage systems to one of the smaller buildings. On top of this we are carrying out repairs and roof maintenance to a further 18 No schools in this break.... So busy then

Stormy weather With the big lead up to the productive high winds and rain, the event was less dramatic than forecast. Tilehurst Roofing were around in the 'Great Storm' of 1987, and believe me the latest winds were nothing compared to that stormy day and night. At the time we were taking 600 calls per day and although we tried to help as many people as possible, it was an endless task.
Continuing on the mortar free roof theme, Easy Verge is a high quality external grade rigid u.p.v.c which is extremely resistant to light degradation and atmospheric pollution. An alternative to wet verge areas, it is a quick and easy system for both slate and tiled roofs and eliminates the verge batten rot that causes the loss of slates We think Easy verge is simply the best looking slate verge available that even allows for a cambered edge.
